“The First Summer of the Rest Of Your Life”: Part One | LaQuita Grinnage, The Very Extraordinary Unique Person

EXTRAORDINARY

Listen: At first, I had difficulty describing the pieces we put together for campaigns like The First Summer of the Rest of Your Life. Where do they fit in the radio world? It’s not news reporting, they’re certainly not commercials, and they’re not quite rote human interest pieces. Currently, I think the pieces are best described as storytelling. When we’re most successful, we tell stories.

That’s what makes this piece on LaQuita so interesting to me. LaQuita has become a storyteller and the process of learning to tell her story has led to an incredible transformation. But don’t take my word for it — meet LaQuita Grinnage:

In July, we’re going to sit down a few days before the regional Youth of the Year competition and then again in the aftermath. Ah! Hold your breath and let’s hope LaQuita’s optimism translates into a victory! I know I’m rooting for her.

    • I’ve been listening to the programs on my drive into Milwaukee, and I’ve read a couple of the stories on this site. I would love to know how our school, (Bryant & Stratton College) could partner with some of these organizations? We would love to be a part of the success stories, and change the lives of young people in Milwaukee. If someone could forward my request to a point person, I’d like to offere scholarship opportunities to high seniors. Thank you for becoming a force in the Milwaukee community.

  2. Alverno College Tweens & Teens is offering children from the Milwaukee Community an opportunity to come on campus and take fun, educational courses. One of these courses, Speak Up & Speak Easy, is geared towards developing communication skills in our youth. The class will focus on listening, speaking, and social interaction. It will show Tweens and Teens the power of working together in groups and how to effectively do that. I recommend signing up anyone from 6th-12th grade. This is the type of class our community needs. Let’s teach our kids how to interact, use their words, and become effective speakers!
